Bald Eagle preferred habitat includes reservoirs and rivers. In winter, they may also
occur locally in semi deserts and grasslands, especially near prairie dog towns. In the last several
yeazs, there have been 10 or more breeding pairs in Moffat, Rio Blanco, Mesa, Montezuma, La
Plata, Archuleta, Adams, and Weld counties. This species is known to occur in Routt County
and its abundance is unknown.
Burrowing Owl preferred habitat includes grasslands in or near prairie dog towns. This
species is a summer resident, mostly in eastern Colorado, and is known to occur in Routt County
though its abundance is unknown.
Western Yellow-Bil]ed Cuckoo preferred habitat includes lowland riparian forests and
urban areas with tall trees. It is a rare spring and fall migrant and summer resident on eastern
plains west to Morgan and Otero counties, and rare west to foothills. This species is an
uncommon local summer resident in western valleys, primarily from Mesa County southward. It
occurs in mountain parks and in foothills and lower mountains. The numbers of this species
fluctuate widely from year to year. This species is known to occur in Routt County and its
abundance is considered casual and/or accidental.
Ferruginous Hawk preferred habitat includes grasslands and semi desert shrub lands, and
is rare in pinon-juniper woodlands. Breeding birds nest in isolated trees, on rock outcrops,
structures such as windmills and power poles, or on the ground. Winter residents concentrate
around prairie dog towns. Winter numbers and distribution fluctuate greatly according to the
availability of prairie dogs; when a local prairie dog population dies off due to plague, hawk
numbers decrease drastically. Migrants and winter residents may also occur in shrub lands and
agricultural areas on eastern plains. At the same time it is a raze summer resident locally on
eastern plains, and occurs very locally in Moffat and Routt counties, along the Book Cliffs, in the
Graad Valley, and in the San Luis Valley. This species is known to occur in Routt County
though its abundance is unknown.
American Peregrine Falcon preferred habitat includes cliffs and forage over adjacent
coniferous and ripazian forests. Migrants and winter residents occur mostly around reservoirs,
rivers, and marshes, but may be seen in grasslands, agricultural azeas, and other habitats. This
species is a rare spring and fall migrant in western valleys, foothills, lower mountains, mountain
parks, and on eastern plains. It is a rare winter resident at Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge
and very rare in western valleys and on eastern plains near foothills. It is also a rare summer
2.7-20c Revised 11/06
