999
SOILS AND GEOLOGY
Summary
Niwot soils occupy approximately 111 . 5 acres of the site,
Loveland 18, and approximately 39 acres of topsoil have
been removed by previous gravel mining and the lake created
by it. Of the total 168.5 acres , only 18 , the Loveland,
can be considered prime farmland, and that only when it is
irrigated with an adequate supply of water. Much of that
18 acres was disturbed in constructing a flood control berm
on the property or will remain unmined. Soils are underlain
by 10 to 22 feet of gravel, which in turn is underlain by
• Pierre Shale. The site is designated an Aggregate Resource
Area by the Boulder County Comprehensive Plan.
Soils
Prior to mining in the 1950 's , approximately 150 acres of
the area were occupied by Niwot soils, which are described as
medium to heavy textured, shallow and underlain by sand and
gravel at a depth less than 20 inches from the 'surface. Niwot
soils have a high water table and are subject to occasional
flooding. About 39 acres of this soil were displaced by
• mining in connection with construction of the Boulder-Denver
Turnpike (now U.S. 36) .
(0
E-1
