C'io_et-gree^. swallow. ~ T?:e violet-green swallow was ttte sa:~'c~(7d Host r!~ux:ant
~~~•cies obse_+-tec'. (average abundance of 6.0 individvals,;.-^i). This species
wits also observed i.n all five vegetation types and was pie 7ecund t!c,st .il..uir
dant species observed in the alfalfa field, grassland,txisture, iuniper and sage-
brus?t types. F_a~.~ever, in all instances, this species was observed as a 'flyover",
_`o_zcing on the f'_yino insects above each vegetation type. Since the study
area ? s small and t)v= passerinne transects were placed within y *.nile of
eac'i other, the same individuals Caere probably observed over each vegetation
type. Thus, t`:e relative abtmdance indices for the violet-gree_-i swallow may
be inflated. T_!:e violet-green swallow exhibited a definite affinity for thc: .-
alfzLa field.
Com.^.nn crow. The com~on crew was the third mist abundant species observed.
..l`houch *_he m^x~on crow was rot found in high nisubers in any habitat type
('_.6 individua_s/)mi over all '...ransects), it did have a wide distribution
wrong habitats in the study area. It was found in all vegetation t]'Pes but
as a result of the low number of observations, an affinity for any one habi-
tat was rot apaarent. Crows, like red-winced blackbirds, tend to occur in
_°locks.
::estern m~c'.rn:_ark. The western meadaolark is a year-sound resident of the
study azez and one the fou_~h ::net abu-s3ant species observed during the breed-
ino bird surveys, averaging 1.5 individuals/)an over all types. This species
was observed in the alfalfa field, grassland, pasture, and juniper habitats
and e.•chi hired a-i affinity _°or Sze jtmiper type.
;yin±er Passerine Habitat. A total of six avian species were observed during
the winter passerine surveys in the I¢ucla study area. The four passerine
species _z decreasing order of relative abundance were: white-crowned
s_.x-~rrow, Oregon junco, western mnadowlazk and raven. Non-passerine species
obser~~ during the winter transects were the mazsh hawk and ring-necked
pheasant.
Riparian.
