T.'uese towns w~rre formrrrly one large foam but were divided b}'
road constrsction and mining activities (personal communication, i•+ay 31,
1979, ~y Ka_ro). A total of 16 adult prairie dogs were observed during a
b1ac~-footed ferret survey of these towns in late May, 1979. ~linnison's -
prairie dogs inhabit open grassy and brushy areas at high elevations,
and are restricted in distribution to south-eastern Colorado (l.echleitner
1969).
AVLx'AL? `vA
Passerine Birds. Breeding and zesident wintering passerines in the Nucia
study azea were surveyed during eazly June, 1979 and January,1990 along 0.5 )an
transacts Ulacc-cl ~>ithin major vegetation types represented in the study area.
The census technique was designed to quantify passerine abundance; however,
all avian species, including raptors and same birds, observed along the
transecs t,~re counted. The results of the breeding and winterirg bird
surveys are provided on orxrguter print-outs in Appendix B, Part Z for each
of the five vegetation types sampled (grassland pasture, uplarrl sagebrush,
juniper, alfal_°a field, ahd riparian). These printouts provide relative
- abundance indices (number of individuals/3an) and macrohabitat affinities for
each species en~untered and Shan~n-iaeiner species diversity indices for
each habitat sampled. A list of all avian species .positively identified
for~the Vucla study area during this and previous studies is provided in
Table 1.
':1ao major topics are considered in the discussion of breeding and wintering
passerine birds. First, the relative i~rtance to avifauna of each habitat
type sampled is described. Determination of importance focuses on three
parameters: species diversity, ~rm~x~sition, and abundance. Second, the
ecru-trrence, distribution and abundance of in~ortant passerine species is
discussed. '_^portatut species are defined as those with a high relative
_~~_
JUN 1 1 t980
•
(Revised July 2006) Attachment 2.04.11-1-38
