In colder months, the house
nnuse may migrate into cTvellinas. A refuse dung located adjacent to the
riparian habitat type probably supports a large population of house mice.
The total relative abundance of the house rrouse over all habitat ti7~es was
O.A individuals/100 trap nights and the sex ratio was 0.50 males aryl 0.50
females. The house House by virtue that all oi~servations occ.-urred in riparian
habitat, showed an affinity for this type.
Western harvest mice are mist often found in dense grassy or weedy areas, and
often in riparian situations (Lechleii-Her 1969). rood sources of this
microtine include seeds, green portions. of plants and insects. Only one
western harvest mouse was captured in the study area. =His individual (male)
was captured in the riparian habitat type. The total relative abundance
of this species over all types was 0.2 individuals/100 trap nights.
Other h'2.'T3R3is. Small and m:^di~rsized mammal species not captured in live
traps but whose presence on the Nucla mine site has been substantiated during
other field activities indude the following species desert cottontail
(Sylvilaaus audu bonii), muskrat (Ondatra ziberhicus), and Gunnison's prairie
dog ( qunnisoni).
^.'he desert cottontail appears to be very cortnon in the study area. Five cotton-
tails were observed during the 1979-1980 field season. The habitat of the
desert ~ttontail includes a variety of ecological situations (e.g.,.desert,
grassland, shrubland, and riparian). Cottontails were observed on the study
area in the upland sagebrush, riparian and grassland pasture habitat types.
One rn~dcrat was observed in the riparian type durincr T.rril, 1979. Muskrats
~ are aquatic rr~vmals, living in streams, lakes, ponds and swam<~s (Zec`~leitner
-30-
•
JUH 1 1 1980
(Revised July 2006) Attachment 2.04.11-1-37
