-3- <br />• wall of the pit will be excavated to the maximum possible slope. This study <br />evaluated the possibility of using 40-foot wide benches at 60-foot vertical <br />intervals. The angle of inclination of the slope between benches was varied <br />from 60 to 70 degrees. <br />INVESTIGATION <br />The investigation for this project was carried out over a period of <br />several months. The investigation started in early September of 1977 and <br />continued through January of 7978. Our investigation included field, <br />laboratory and analyticai procedures. At the time the field investigation <br />was started, very little data had been developed by Kerr Coal Company. Ap- <br />parently the existing mine was one which had been developed on a trial-and- <br />error basis. The first portion of our investigation ~•ias to make a prelimin- <br />ary field reconnaissance of the site and search government agencies, as <br />• well as public libraries to locate all available geologic data covering this <br />area. Concurrent with this attempt to locate information regarding the <br />geologic conditions within the area, a field exploration program was in <br />progress by the Kerr Coal Company. ~!e assisted in the location and general <br />layout of the exploratory borings. The borings were designed to develop data <br />regarding sequence and structure of various formations underlying the site, <br />obtain samples for laboratory analysis for both strength and various en- <br />vironmental tests, and to develop information for use in evaluation of coal <br />reserves. Kerr personnel were instructed by our h1r. Church in various log- <br />ging procedures and the methods of preservation of core in order to obtain <br />the maximum possible information from the various borings.
