Introduction
Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc. (MAC) has completed a cultural resources
inventory of several proposed development aeeas for the Lorencito Coal Mine not covered by
previous inventory (McKibbin et al. 1997; McKibbin 1997). These include portions or all of
sedimentation ponds 001, 002, 003, 005, 007, 008 and 009; fill areas 2, 3, 5, and 8; portions of a
proposed water line corridor extending from the Purgatoire River to the P3 portal location in Cow
Canyon; and power line corridors extending from the mine permit boundary to the load out facility
in Lorencito Canyon, and to the P3 portal location. The survey aeeas and cultural resources within
these aeeas aze shown on the map in Appendix A. Appendix B provides a tabulaz summary of
cultural resources within these project aeeas.
These inventories followed the methods described for the original survey (McKibbin et al.
1997:14-16), though portions of the water line and power line corridors that fall on the valley floor
of the Picketwire Valley were no[ covered by pedestrian inventory for reasons discussed below.
Three sites and eight isolated finds were discovered in these areas, two previously recorded sites
• from the 1996 inventory (McKibbin et al. 1997) aze within the survey azea, two new segments of
SLA7112, the Colorado and Wyoming Railroad have been recorded, and a previously recorded
historic church, SLA1966, is addressed. Evaluations for National Register eligibility follow the
discussion presented by McKibbin et al. (1997:16-17).
This report is intended to provide preliminary information and recommendations for this
investigation as part of the permitting process for the mine. A full ftnal report of all 1997
investigations will be prepared at the close of the 1997 field season, as proposed by McKibbin et al.
(1997:122).
The general approach to the investigations reported here has been to cover a large enough
area to include both the azea directly affected by the proposed development (sedimentation ponds,
fill aeeas, and water and power line construction) and sufficient surrounding tetr~tirt to allow for some
flexibility in placement of access roads while providing a sufficient buffer for instances where the
full extent of areal impact may not be cleazly understood. As has been the case throughout this
project, the only locational information available has been map information at a 1":400' scale, which
is sufficiently detailed to convey good general location information, but none of these facilities were
mazked on the ground at the time of survey, and the exact location of the power lines and water line
aze still to be finalized.
