It is not expected that the subsidence will deteriorate the <br />stability of old landslides to the extent that their deformations <br />could be renewed. Attention will have to be paid to mining close <br />to the coal outcrop and to the design of the outcrop barrier pil- <br />lars, 'Their failure could potentially cause extensive sliding of <br />the slopes in the vicinity of the outcrop. <br />Few significant buildings and structures are located within the.• <br />proposed long-term lease area. However, structures identified <br />which could be susceptible to damage due to subsidence induced <br />strains include the hlickle House restaurant, pbrrell's ranch, the <br />Pitkin pS:sa Aqueduct, and the Q+II well field with its associated <br />equipment and pipeline. <br />9na11 effects due to subsidence are anticipated. These effects can further <br />be controlled utilizing alternative mining techniques: <br />1. Leaving solid coal blocks. <br />2. Feduced recovery~levelopnent only. <br />3. Design of outcrop barrier pillars. <br />Substantial protection of various land uses can be afforded with regular <br />monitoring and quick repair. ¢iick repair is ensured by anticipating the <br />worst case effects of subsidence and designing corrective measures before <br />damage occurs. <br />This Handbook is based on the best information available. Additional infor- <br />mation is being developed constantly and these plans are open to evaluation, <br />appraisal, and justified changes. In the initial permit term, few land use <br />• effects are possible. The effects, though slight, will be extensively moni- <br />torcxl for future changes in mine design or repair procedures. <br />Although Geo-Hydro Wnsulting, Inc. identified several land uses, the only <br />resources with predicted impacts are: <br />1.
