SUBSIDENCE HANDBOOK
• PIPELINES
Introduction
The Pitkin Mesa Pipeline approximately parallels Steven's C~lch. It is a 6"
diameter PVC pipeline. The pipeline was newly constructed in 1980. The
pipeline services approximately 160 danestic taps located on Pitkin Mesa.
CWI has constructed a 4" diameter ductile iron pipeline from the CWI well-
field to the Orchard Valley Mine site, This is the water supply for Orchard
Valley Paine.
Worst-Case Damage
Subsidence-induced strains exceeding the capacity of pipeline allowable
strength could lead to leaking and disruption of flow.
• Pre-Damage Monitoring
Pitkin Mesa Pipeline
Six months prior to undermining of the Pitkin Mesa Pipeline and contin-
uing until undermining is ~npleted, the 500,000 gallon storage tank at
the CWI wellfield will be monitored for water level daily. See
attached form. If the level reaches a pre-determined level, CWI
management will be notified. A determination of cause will be made and
if determined to be leakage, Pitkin Mesa Pipeline will be notified of
problem. Calculations attached show that Pitkin P'Yesa Pipeline Company
can operate on an emergency level for eight days.
Orchard Valley Mine Site Tank
The level of the 100,000 gallon tank located at the Orchard Valley fan
level will be monitored for water level daily. If it reaches a pre-
• determined level, CWI management will be notified so determination of
leak.,ge can be made.
