-:pith the soil surface, so decomposition into duff and
organic matter can occur. It is also recommended that this
mowing or shredding be done in strips to create more edge
,~ effect for wildlife. Mowing and or shredding should be
restricted until aster July 15 to allow ground nesting and
loafing by birds and mammals.
7. If grazing is not restricted by orooram reQUlations it can
be very effective in maintaining plant vigor by periodic
livestock use. The time and intensity of grazing needed
will depend on landuse objectives. The amount of forage
removed will not exceed Proper Grazing Use X528 standards
and specifications. If the purpose is to increase warm
season species, grazing should be limited to the months of
mid-May to June. If the purpose is to increase cool season
species, limit grazing to the months of mid-July to August.
In many situations, grazing can be limited to the dormant
season. If the objective is to increase fouraing saltbush
and or •.rinterfat, summer grazing for a short pericd (less
than 30 days) is preferred to dor*nant season grazing.
d. Prescribed Burning Standard and Specification =778 can be
used effectively to maintain stands of seeded Drosses
provided that the burn is conducted at the proper time and
under the proper conditions. Currently SCS employees in
Colorado are not allowed to participate in the application
of a Prescribed Burn. However you can provide information
to the producer on the requirements that need to be met to
conduct a Prescribed Burn. In addition you can provide
information on availablity of private contractors who do
prescribed burning or to the Colorado State Forest Service
who will conduct prescribed burns for a fee.
C. Noxious Weed Control:
1. If noxious weeds are present or become established on a
seeded field, control procedures will need to be initiated
to prevent infestation of adjacent land. Control with
mechanical, biological or chemical means will be required.
If brush species become established that are not compatible
with the planned use of the area, Prescribed Burning
Standard and Specification X778 may also be used. For
chemical control, follow the recommendations in current
Colorado Pesticide Guides. All chemical label instructions
will need to be followed to prevent adverse effects on
water quality.
C
TGN #258 (Page 3 of 3) SCS Colorado, January 1991
