Quality
1. select grasses, fortis and shrubs that •:rill control
erosion and reduce sediment. This vegetative cover
will reduce runoff, act as a filter to trao_ sediments
and sediment attached substances, increase infiltration
and reduce loss of :rater soluble ..^.utrients and
chemicals into downstream water courses. In most
situations agricultural chemicals coill not be used or
greatly reduced ~:rhich in turn will bene**i*_ surface and
ground crater quality.
SPECIFICATIONS
A. Species Selection:
1. Select grass, 'orb and shrub species that are adapted to
the soil and/or range site. Follow the guidelines in the
applicable standard and specification such as Range Seeding
=550, ?assure and Hayland Planting 8512, .~ildlife Upland
Habitat ?4anage^.ent =645 and Critical area Planting ;342.
Where available, use the specifications developed at the
area office level =or appropriate species selection.
2. For seedir,q rates, seedbed preparation, seeding equipment
requirments, planting depths, seed quality, erosion control
measures, management during establishment, etc., refer to
the above listed specifications.
B. Management After Establishment:
1. To maintain and/or renovate new or existing stands of
seeded vegetation, practices such as Proper Grazing Use
;528, Pasture and Hayland Management =510, Prescribed
Burning ;338, Planned Grazing Systems X556 and mowing or
shredding will be needed. Vegetation that consists
primarially of introduced cool season grass species may
need periodic fertilizaticn to maintain vigorous stands.
Soil tests are recommended to determine appropriate
fertilizer amounts.
2. Mowing and or shredding can be used to maintain grass
stands. These practices may be the only options in some
situations. Mowing or shredding should be done at a time
that ne*d growth will be initiated soon after the mowing or
shredding operation is completed. The major purpose is to
reduce standing decadent material and put it in contact

TGN #258 {page 2 of 3) SCS Colorado, January 1991
