~ofile. Also included are areas of Rock outcrop.
inclusions make up about 16 percent of the
Runoff is rapid, and the hazard of erosion is severe.
These soils are suited to pasture or native greases.
LwPorte Series
The LaPorte series consists of shallow, well drained
soils that formed in material weathered from lime-
stone. These soils are on uplands and are underlain by
limestone at a depth of 10 to 20 inches. Elevation
ranges from 6,200 to b,8OO feet. Slopes are 3 to 30
percent. The native vegetation is mainly blue grams,
western wheatgrass, needleandthread, yucca, and
pridrlypear cactus. Mean annual precipitation ranges
lrom 13 to 16 inches, mean annual air temperature
ranges from 48° to 60° F, and the frost-free season
ranges from 136 to 160 days.
In a representative profile the surface layer is ray-
ish brown loam about 9 inches thick. The underlying
material is light brownish gray channery loam about
?inches thick. Below this is limestone bedrock.
Permeability is moderate, and the available water
capacity is low. Reaction is moderately alkaline.
These soils are used mainly for native grasses.
of LaPorte-Rock outcrop complex, S to 30 percent
R-16 inches; weakly fractured limestone.
The A horizon is loam or fine sandy loam 6 to 16
inches thick. Content of rock fragments ranges from
6 to 36 percent.
59-LaPorte•RocJc outcrop oompleY, 3 to 30 percent
slops. This complex consists of gently eloping to steep
soils on uplands and ridges. It is about 46 percent
LaPorte loam and about 36 percent Rock outcrop. La-
Porte loam is commonly on the eastern side of ridges
and is on the smoother parts of the western aide, and
Rodt outcrop ie commonly on ridgetops and on the
western aide, but is throughout the complex. Rock
outcrop is mainly limestone or limy shale.
Included with this complex in mapping are about
20 percent areas of Kim, Minnequa, and Midway soils.
Runo@ is rapid, and the hazard of erosion is severe.
This soil is suited to pasture and native grasses.lt
has been used to a large extent for strip mines because
the underlying limestone is used in the manufacture
of cement. Capability unit VIIe-1, dryland; LaPorte
Lsrim Series
The Larim series consists of deep, well drained soils
that formed in mixed alluvium. These soils are on face,
benches, and terrace edges and are underlain by very
gravelly sand at a depth of 11 to 20 inches. Elevation
ranges from 4,800 to 6,300 feet. Slopes are b to 40
percent. The native vegetation is mainly blue grams,
(orbs and shrubs. Mean annual precipitation ranges
from 13 to 16 inches, mean annual air temperature
ranges from 47° to 99° F, and the frost-free aeasoa
ranges from 136 to 160 days.
