Fluvaquents, Nearly Level
33-F7uvaquents, nearly level. This soil is on flood
plains, low terraces, and bottom ]ands. The surface
and underlying layers are extremely variable, range
from sandy loam to clay loam, and are commonly
stratified with thin layers of sand or clay. In places
the underlying material is sand and gravel. A water
table is commonly at a depth of leas than 12 inches at
some time during spring and summer, and the soil is
also flooded occasionally during spring and summer.
Drainage is impractical or impossible because of a
lack of suitable outlets.
Runoff ie alight. The hazard of erosion is slight,
although there to some cutting on areas near stream
channels in places.
This soil is suited to pasture or native grasses. A
few areas are used for hay. Capability unit Vw-1, dry-
Fort Collins Series
The Fort Collins series consists of deep, well drained
soils that Yormed in alluvium. These soils are on ter-
races and fans. Elevation ranges from 4,800 to 6,500
feet. Slopes are 0 to 9 percent. The native vegetation
is mainly blue grams and western wheatgrass and
some fortis and shrubs. Mean annual precipitation
ranges from 13 to 15 inches, mean annual air tem-
perature ranges from 98° to 50° F, and the frost-free
season ranges from 135 to 150 days.
In a representative profile the surface layer is light
brownish gray loam about 5 inches thick. The subsoil
is light brownish gray, brown, and pale brown loam
about 19 inches thick. The underlying matsrtal is pale
brown loam.
Permeability is moderate, and the available water
capacity is high. Reaction is neutral above a depth of
about 8 inches, mildly alkaline between depths of 8
and 18 inches, and moderately alkaline below a depth
of 18 inches.
These soils are used for irrigated and dryfarmed
crops and pasture.
