1~
western wheatgrass, Indian ricegrass, and big sagebrush. If the condition
of the range deteriorates, shrubs increase. If the range condition
continues to deteriorate cheatgrass, annual fescues, pinyon, and Utah
juniper invade. The average annual production of air-dry vegetation ranges
r
from 600 Co 1,200 pounds. Brush management improves deteriorated areas of~
range that are producing more woody shrubs than were present in the
potential plant community. If the range vegetation is seriously
deteriorated, seeding is needed. Suitable seeding mixtures can include
western wheatgrass, needleandthread, Indian ricegrass, and crested
wheatgrass. The plants selected for seeding should meet the seasonal
requirements of livestock or wildlife, or both. Seeding late in fall helps
to insure that the content of moisture in the soil will he adequate for the
establishment of seedlings next spring.
The potential plant community on this unit is mainly needleandthread,
This unit is well suited Co hay and pasture. If this unit is used for
hay and pasture, the main limitations are low available''~.holding capacity of
the soil and roughness of the landscape. Leveling helps to insure the
uniform application of water. Proper grazing practices, weed control, and
fertilizer are needed to insure maximum quality of forage. P,ecause of the
moderately rapid permeability of Glenberg, the length of runs should be
adjusted to permit adequate infiltration of water.
The Glenberg soil is fair soil reconstruction material for drastically
disturbed areas due to excess lime.
This map unit is in capability subclasses IIe, irrigated, and VIe,
nonirrigated. It is in Sandy Foothills range site.
