Seasonal Use of the Area :
The affected area lies in an area that sees heavy use as mule deer
winter range . No other big game is known to inhabit affected or
surrounding land areas on a seasonal basis . Mammals commonly found
on affected land throughout the year include Nutall ' s cottontail ,
porcupines , coyotes and foxes .
C . Threatened or Endangered Species :
There are no known threatened or endangered species inhabiting af-
fected land in Coaldale . A family of golden eagles is known to
winter in the country a few miles east of the affected land , and is
occasionally seen hunting in the neighboring areas . Mining does
not seem to have appreciable affect on the populations of rabbit ,
gophers , ground rodents , etc .
D . Although temporary loss of some graze and browse is evident from
the mining operation , not enough area is disturbed to significantly
affect wildlife habitat . On the contrary , mule deer and fox are
commonly viewed by the workmen throughout the year , especially in
the winter months . Noise and human activity do not seem to signi -
ficantly affect the wildlife population in the surrounding area ,
and eventually , though concerted efforts in the reclamation program-
ming , the affected land should promote even larger wildlife popula -
tions than before mining activities .
WATER RESOURCES WITHIN AFFECTED AREA :
Due to lack of surface water on the affected land or in close proximity
to affected land , low water table , and high permeability of the soils
and mine spoils , mining will have no measurable effect on the water re-
sources of surrounding area .
t
