The seed mixes have been developed to return as many of the original native species as possible. Nearly
all of these species plus the additional non-native species are cool season species. For these reasons,
seasonal variety will not be evaluated for reGamation success. Although the species in the recaimed areas
are classified as cool season species, some of these begin their growth early in the season while others
begin growth later in the season. Additionally, many will regrow in the fall. These characteristics enhance
forage availability during much of the grazing season.
Reference Area. The reference areas will be monitored during the period of eMended liability to more
accurately gauge average cover and production and evaluate annual climatic affects on the vegetation.
Monitoring will be carried out at the same time during revegetation monitoring activities in order to provide a
basis for comparison of the status and continued development of the reclaimed plant communities. The
reference areas will be adequately and simultaneously sampled during the last two years of the extended
liability period to evaluate revegetation success.
Reclamation Schedule
Introduction. Seneca II Mine has been undergoing final reclamation for a number of years and is ready
to apply for Phase I bond release. TR37 (03/OS) updates the current status of the lands prior to the
submittal of the bond release application. The following paragraphs present a discussion of the
plans and methods used to bring the disturbed mine area to current conditions.
This section presents a timetable for each major phase of the reclamation plan and projected reGamation
schedules for the Seneca II Mine permit area and lands under support fatalities and structures. Fatalities
such as roads and sediment ponds that are not approved as elements of the postmining land use plan must
be scheduled for reclamation. Additional information regarding the timing of reclamation activities may be
found in Tabs 9, 12, and other parts of 13, which discuss the various components of the reclamation plan.
ExhibR 13-2 illustrates the baGfilling and grading schedule.
Timing of Reclamation Activities. A generalized timetable of reclamation activities is shownrn Figure 13-t.
The timetable outlines the sequence and timing of each major phase of reclamation. It is not possible to
specify precisely the timing of each reGamation phase for the following reasons: (1) variables such as
customer demand for wal, coal qualiiy, overburden characteristics, and manpower and equipment
availability affect the rate of progress of mining activities; and (2) variables such as manpower and
equipment availability, weather conditions and season, the availability of matedals, and the sequence or rate
of mining advance affect the progress of grading, resoiling, and seeding in the mining area.
TR-37 1336 Revised 04/05
•

•
