• - Combined relative cover of the three forts and four grasses will not exceed 80 percent.
NOTE: Frequency is defined as the number of samples in which the species was present divided by the
total number of samples.
Additionally, species density, or the total number of species per 100 m2 plot, in the reclaimed areas will be
greater than or equal to 20. Species density data will be collected during cover sampling with the 100 m2
pbt oriented on the cover transect.
A comprehensive species list will be prepared for the reclaimed and reference areas. Both cover and
frequency data will be used in discussions on species distribution and evenness. While many perennial
species in reclaimed areas have low relative cover values, their corresponding frequency values can be
high. The use of cover, frequency, and species density data in association with the diversity standard wilt
allow assessment of the potential for increasing diversity and the cepabil'Ay for succession.
Woody Plant Density. Shrub and tree establishment in reclaimed areas of the permit area will be achieved
through natural regeneration from direct hauling of topsoil, reinvasion from adjacent undisturbed
• communities, seeding of shrubs, planting of shrub and tree seedlings, and establishment of live shrub
transplant sites. The planting of trees and shrubs will be oriented towards the development of habitat
"islands" or °groupings' to benefit wildlife. Seeding will be done as addition to the seed mixes applied over
the reclaimed acres or as concentrated seeding areas to achieve the results of "islands".
The above shrub density standard for reclaimed areas is 1000 stems per acre, averaged over the reclaimed
areas. This will also be the standard for concentrated shrub establishment areas. Woody plant densities
will be estimated by randomly locating direct count plots or quadrants in association with the randomly
located cover/production sample plots. A 2-meter by 50-meter (t00mz) or larger direct count plot will be
used for estimating woody plant densities. Stems rooted within the direct count plot will be tallied with
countable stems determined by criteria specified in Rule 4.15.8(7)(a-c). Numbers will be presented as
stems/plot, stems/hectare, and stems/acre. Density shall be considered acceptable when the mean shrub
density in the reclaimed area will not be less than 90 percent of the 1000 stems per acre standard with 90
percent statistical confidence.
Seasonal Varieri. Seasonal variety in native lands on and adjacent to the permit area is essentially not
present since stands are comprised of predominantly cool season species.
•
1335 Revised 0/75193
