2.04.8 Climatological Information
• Site-specific data on the climate at the proposed mine site
are not available. However, precipitation data have been recorded for
Steamboat Springs and Hayden. Temperature information is also available
for Steamboat Springs. The proposed mine site is located approximately
22 air miles to the southwest of Steamboat Springs and approximately 11
air miles to the south-southeast of Hayden.
Although the rugged topography in Routt County causes large variations
in climate within short distances, the climatic data recorded for Steamboat
Springs and Hayden should roughly approximate that at the proposed mine
site. Elevations at the proposed mine site vary from 7,900 to 8,000 feet.
The weather stations at Steamboat Springs and Hayden are located at ground
elevations of 6,695 and 6,400 feet, respectively.
The normal precipitation, taken from "Climatography of the United
States, No. 81-4, Decennial Census of U.S. Climate," for Steamboat Springs
and Hayden, are given below. Temperature normals from the same source are
• also given for Steamboat Springs. The 10-year 24 hour precipitation event
for this area is 1.6 inches. This number was taken from Figure S-7 of ~D(
"Procedures for Determining Peak Flows in Colorado," Technical Release of ~-
c~ 0~
the Soil Conservation Service, March 1960. ,~ ~~
~~,
~~
Station
Jan
Feb
Mar Month
Apr May Jun
Jul
Auq
Sep
Oct
NoV
Dec
ANN
Precipitation (in.)
Steamboat
Springs 2.41 2.31 2.27 2.35 2.06 1.56 1.40 1.49 1.48 1.79 1.90 2.45 23.47
Hayden 1.24 1.14 1.30 1.50 1.47 1.21 1.25 1.19 1.24 1.46 1.09 1.36 15.45
Temperature (oF)
Steamboat
Springs 15.1 .19.4 27.5 39.1 48.5 55..5 62.0. 60.6 .53,1 43.3 38.7 18.9 39.30
Wind Speed and Wind Direction data were requested from the Colorado
Climate Center at Colorado State University.
