INTRODIICTION
• This cultural resource inventory report is submitted in compliance with the requirements
oC the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Environmental Policy
Act of 1969, Executive Order 11593 of 1971, the Archaeological and Historic
Preservation Act of 197-1 and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979. It
was prepared by lVCR11 at the request of Seneca Coals Limited to locate and identify
prehistoric and historic cultural resources within land proposed for strip mining
activities. The surface land of this project is private; however, the minerals are
federally owned.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The objective of this project was to identify and evaluate all cultural resources within
the proposed lease area (hereafter referred to as the project area). In order to carry out
this goal, a literature review and files search were first conducted to identify previously
recorded sites in and near the project area. Once the files search was completed, a 10040
intensive survey was conducted to locate and record all cultural resources within the
• project area.
PROJECT LOCATION
The project is located in Routt County, Colorado, approximately six miles south of the
Hayden Power Generating Station, between Steamboat Springs and Craig, Colorado (Map
1). The project area is located in Township SN, Range 87R', in a small southern portion
of section 8, the majority of section 17, the southeastern corner of section 18, the
eastern two-thirds of section 19, the western quarter of section 20, the northwest
quarter of the northwest quarter of section 29, and most of the northeast quarter of
section 30. These areas are mapped on two USGS quadrangles: the Mount Harris 7.5
minute series (sections 8, 17, 18, and 19) and Dunekley 7.5 minute series (sections 19, 2D,
29, and 30). The precise boundaries are illustrated on Map 2. The area surveyed totaled
1,413 acres.

1
