Aspect is to the west. Vegetation
includes scrub oak, wheatgrass, silver save,
and chokeclierrv.
Site Size 1~0 m x 60 m
Site Description - This site is n coal mine cut into the side of a
ridge. The mine was opened by a
homesteader named Ottenberg, sometime
around 1929*. A coal seam, the remnants of
• a road cut in the side of the ridge, and a
considerable amount of debris associated
with mining activities, are found on the
site. Most of the wood debris indicates a
platform or ramp was built out from the
slope, most likely for loading materials into a
transport below. Very little of this ramp
remains. The remnants of narrow gauge rail
and part of an ore car are in the debris pile.
On an alluvial flat below the mine is a dump
which is still used by the Yoasts. Most
artifacts in the dump are too recent to be
considered cultural resources. There are
several cars older than 50 years in the dump,
but the cars were probably added after
1929. The dump and the mine were recorded
as one site because of their close proximity
to each other.
Site Significance The site is in poor condition and not unique
to the to area and is considered ineligible to
the NRHP.
Project Impact The site is within the permit boundaries but
outside the direct impact zone.
• Slanaoement Recommendations No further work.
* Personal Communication, Leonard Yoast, October 2, 1979.
20 ;
