The
location for this bench-cut rock mining operation will be located along the
Arkansas River on the old Harvey Ranch in Parkdale, Colorado. This permit
was approved in spite of the fact that over 100 neighboring landowners
appeared at the public hearing opposing this permit (only 1 out of 36 who spoke
was in favor)
Agile Stone Systems proposes a 24-hour operation which includes rail car
and rail line maintenance (most rock being transported to Kansas). The
commissioners approved this permit with few blasting restrictions, no proof of
adequate water supply, and with the only access to the mine being the Old
Harvey Bridge that was built in 1915 and is hardly suitable for the kind of truck
traffic this type of operation will require.
My major concern, and the concern of my neighbors, is that the County
does not have any geological information on the stability of this area and how
blasting will affect both the fault line which runs under Parkdale, and how it will
affect the water sources of neighboring landowners. My husband and I own 70
acres located approximately 1 mile from the proposed mine site, on which we
built a custom log home 7 years ago . Even though we live less than a mile from
the Arkansas River, water is scarce and some that is available through wells is
contaminated with cyanide (indeed, two wells close to the proposed mine site
are contaminated with cyanide). Our well, like most, feeds from an
underground spring and was drilled through shale (a good portion of our
property is shale). While our water has a fairly high Sulfur content, we value it
greatly and use it for both our home, lawn, and for the horses we raise.
k~
~~(\ ~~ Beverly Breeze Krieger
