10
'll Holes
All evidence of cultural activity located on drill hole sites or access
alignments is recent in nature. Debris and disturbances noted include those
associated with vehicular travel through the areas surveying actlvities~ drilling
activities, and recreational use of the North Folic Cagyon.
Haxlc's Nest Afine rea
The cursory examination given the Hawk's Nest Mine area revealed only re-
cent aryl mayor disturbances resulting from mining activities. Disturbance resulting
from vehicular travel and coal processing and transport were noted. Zt is highly
probable that ar~v historic or prehistoric remains that may have existed in the area
have been displaced or destroyed.
Minis Waste Disposal Area
One isolated prehistorlc artifacts one isolated historic artifact, and much
recent debris were noted in this project area.
Recent debris appeared to be the result of use of this area as a dump.
~umerous piles of recent trash occur throughout the area and include bottles and
bars with screx top lids cans with crimped as opposed to soldered seams, and plas-
tic and rubber items.
The skeletal remains of sheep were also noted in the project area. This
may indicate that the area xas previously used for sheep grazing (which may also
quallfy as a partial explanation for the lack of vegetation in the area). However,
the occurrence of two sheep skeletons with a recent trash pile may indicate that
carcasses were merely disposed of with other domestic trash.
One historic bottle fragment was noted in a pile of more recent trash. The
item is the neck and tenriinus of a bottle with mold seams extending to within one
inch of the tenninus~ and then curving at the end. Tt is discolored to a Saint .
greens with rainbowed blotches across the surface. The item was not collected.
A prehistoric isolated find was encountered during investigations and was
collected. The item is a dark brown translucent chert flake with two snap fractures
and a slight amount of lateral retouch. Though breakage has removed the proximal
potion of the flakes slight medial thickening may indicate that the flake had a
• bulb of percussion when whole.
