2.n4.3(i)
The coal bearing formations outcrop along the base of Grand Mesa.
tduch of these formations are covered by Quaternary alluvial gravel.
This alluvial material formed largely of basaltic boulders from
Grand Mesa constitutes most of the agricultural land in the area.
Thus, the area was not heavily saturated with farming activity.
This activity primarily includes grazing and fruit orchards.
(2) A Statement of the conditions, capability, and productivity
of the land within the proposed permit area affected by surface
operations, including:
(a) A map and supporting narrative of the uses of the land existing
at the time of the filing of the application.
The land Use ldap, 2.04.3(2)(a)-1, illustrates the current use
of the land within and adjacent to the permit area of the Red Canyon
#1 ~.ine and proposed #2 Mine. As shown on the Land Use Map,
2.04.3(2)(a)-1, the land is primarily tree covered with cedar trees,
with areas cleared for farming and grazing, orchards, and the
industrial or mine site area. The cleared pastures and orchards
• , are irrigated.
The use of the land at the time of the filing of the application is
shown on Land Use Map, 2.04.3(2)(a)-1. This use is consistent with
the mining operations since 1916.
The land within the permit area is used for supportive facilities
to the Red Canyon #1 Mine and proposed #2 Mine. Structures house
the mine office, bathouse, old shop, shop warehouse, and coal
handling facilities. Haul roads are used for transporting coal,
equipment and personnel on the site. Refer to the Affected Land Map,
2.04.3(2)(a)-2, for the location of these facilities.
Within the shaded portion of the Land Use Map, 2.04.3(2)(a)-1, the
pasture grazing areas comprise approximately 914 acres. The orchards
Comprise approximately 283 acres and the surface facilities of the
Red Canyon #1 Mine and proposed #2 l4ine comprise approximately 27 acres.
• (b) A narrative of land-capability and productivity.
REVISED May 8, 1981 35
