Ne live approximately nine miles south of Montrose on Aighway 550, sad our
property ie located approximately 1/4 ails couch of the proposed Gaited Companies
of !Bess County, inc. gravel pit and asphalt plant site. 9ie are aware that iJaited
Paving has submitted an application for a gravel piL mining operation.
Its are wriLinq this letter in protest of that application and feel that
this location is inappropriate for the operaeion.
fte are the second generation owners of our property and our ownerships have
exceeded 54 years. This area has bean agricultural and reaidentisl with limited
commercial operations. this area has been known as one of the moat scenic and
photographed arena in Meatera Colorado. the drive from lbatrose to Ridgway sad
over the Killion Dollar Aighway is one of the most spectacular •itee sad scenic
highways in North Ilmerien. ?ouriem is a major economic factor in our area, and
the beauty and scenery is why she tourists select this arse for Lheir vacations.
Ste are not opposed to gravel mining operations. However, the location of
this operation on a hiatorieal scenic highway seams totally inappropriate. There
are numerous other eights that would not Lave the impact of destroying the scenic
aspects of Highway 550.
From the figures that Lave barn released by Onited Paving, it is obvious
that the mining operation is not intended for merely Montrose county, and it ie
not a coincidence that it i• located within three miles of the ouray County line.
IInited Paving has publieslly stated that they will W selling and transporting
mterials to both Outay County and San Miguel County. Ile a note, both Ouray
County and San Miguel County have made iL quite clear that they do not want this
typo of operation located within their counties and have just recently been
suecesaful in slopping a gravel mining operation in both eountiea.
Onlika a business that is eetabliehed and iatendo to bt of economic
importance to the Montrose area Dy having a longevity, the gravel mining
opesation is intended to mine their gravel and then leave. finlike all of the
other people that have made chic area of Montrose County their home and want to
keep it beautiful for all to enjoy, the mining operation is here Lo strip the
area of its farming beauty and leave a huge hole in the earth. It is very easy
for the gravel company to do thin for they do not have to live in the area after
they destroy its natural beauty.
Destroying the beauty is only one of the problems aeweiated with the
operation. Lnoiher equally if not greater proDlsm that will be created is that
of traffic on as extremely overcrowded highway. Oar highway ie totally
inadequate foe the amount of traffic that it ie handling at this time. rte are
very aware of this problem since our family owns property on both sides of the
