r-1
LJ
C~
•
included in the appendix to this exhibit, A brief description of the design
of each ditch is-provided below.
Diversion Ditch No. 1
Drainage down Coal Gulch will be diverted around the disturbance area with the
construction of Diversion Ditch No. 1. Peerless will upgrade Ditch No. 1 to
ensure adequate flow capacity and minimize impacts to surface water flows in
Coal Gulch. As part of the Reclamation Plan, Peerless plans to leave the
upper part of Ditch No. 1 as a permanent structure. The lower part will be
relocated as shown on the Post-mining Topography Map, Map 14. Design
calculations for Ditch No. 1 are included in the appendix to this exhibit.
Ditch No. 1 has been observed to contribute seepage onto the upper mine bench
area where the undisturbed Coal Gulch channel enters the upper section of
Ditch No. 1. To control this seepage, a bentonite (clay) dike was constructed
along the upper 700 foot section of Ditch No. 1. This dike was built by
excavating a trench down to bedrock with a backhoe and filling the trench with
bentonite. The dike was also keyed into bedrock at the opposite (north) side
of the channel at the head of the ditch. In this manner a barrier to flow was
constructed to prevent water from flowing onto the mine bench.
Diversion Ditch No. 2'
Ditch No. 2 is located east of the disturbed area along an existing road,
Flows from this ditch discharge to an existing drainage and the south side of
Revised 9/12/86
6
