Pond Volume = 2.23 acre feet = 2.75 x 106 liters
pH 7•- pH 6 = 0.1 grams hydrogen ion/liter
Mass hydrogen = 2.75 x 105 grams
50 equivalents CaC03 to neutralize 1 equivalent hydrogen ion
100 lb lime = 45454 grams x 2 equivalents/100 grams CaC03
2.75 x 105 grams hydrogen/9.1 x 104 equivalents = 3 bags lime
4. Proportionate amounts based on the actual volume of water to be
treated in the pond and the difference between a pH of 7 and the
actual pH measurement will be used in determining the quantities of
lime to be added.
• 5. A second measurement.of pH will be made following pond treatment. If
additional treatment is required it will be performed. Water will be
released from the pond only when it is within NPDES limitations.
An evaluation of the feasibility and effectiveness of the manual pond
water treatment method described above will be conducted through April
30, 1987 and a discussion on the feasibility of meeting pond effluent
immitations will be provided to the Division on May 31, 1987 prior to
continuance of the program. Should the results indicate the manual
treatment method to not be feasible, a proposed alternate plan using
an automatic treatment method will be provided to the Division for
review and approval.
•
Revised 9/12/86
4
