• ENVIRONRiENT~L DESCRIP'T'ION
The study area is located approximately 26 miles south of Craig, Colorado, j!~st
southwest of the town of axial. The area surveyed is on the too of i11t. Streeter on the
eastern end of a dissected ride.
Vegetation in the project area consists of scrub oak, chokecherry, big sage,
rabbitbrush, lupine, wheatgrass, prickly pear, wild raspberry, cattails (in one pond),
juniper, and a multitude of wild flowers. The area itself is not enhanced by water other
than three man-made ponds one of which is covered partially with fresh cattails, and two
of which appear somewhat murky and lifeless.
The topography of the area is a heavily dissected ridge with eroded crests which
carry minimal vegetation. Elevation in the area ranges from 7,280 feet above sea level
at the west end to 7,000 feet at the east end (ridge terminus). The terrain just south of
the study area consists of a strip mine and the area just north is largely steep slopes.
The range of slope is from 2° to 32° in the study area, while critical slopes immediztely
adjacent equal 52°.
• The study area is dissected by seasonal washes and dotted by ponds; however the
major drainage in the vicinity is Good Spring Creek which flows north to the Yampa
River. This water source produces lush areas of vegetation and attracts quantities of
game. Fauna observed in the area were deer, rodents, song birds, cottontails,
jackrabbits, redtail hawks, and grouse. This is by no means the limit of fauna in the area.
Disturbance to the specific study area consists of pond dredging and the use of a
t~vo-track road. However, the area is flanked by a strip mine in production which is very
visible from the study area.

3
