(3) Provide a detailed explanation of why the entire mine
plan area has not been surve e3 for cultural resources.
_ It appears that only the 5/8 ,portion of Sec. 11, T3N,
• R93Sa has been surve}>ed and not the entire mine plan
area as required. The following areas appear to have
not been surveyed for cultural resources:
T3N, R93Sa
Sec. 9 - all
sec. 4 - all
_ Sec. 3 - all except N 1/2 or NE 1/4
Sec. 2 - all except E 1/4 and [4 2/3 of N l/2 of
NSA 1/4
T.: V, R93S9
Sec. 33 - E 3/4 except E 1/2 of AZ9 1/4
Sec. 35 - S9 1/2
Sec. 36 - E 1/2 of SE 1/4
Sec. 27 - S~ 1/2 and N 1/2 of NE 1/4
Sec. 26 - N 1/2 of NS9 1/4
Sec. 22 - E 3/4
Sec. 23 - S 1/2
The above areas must be surveyed for cultural resources
and a report submitted before the mine plan is approved.
• Res_oonse
The entire mine plan area was surveyed by Lischka
in 1975 at the time the proposed alternate railroad
routes were surveyed. Sites located within the mine
plan area are discussed in the "Cultural and Paleontolog-
ical Resource Inventory and Evaluation of the Proposed
S9. R. Grace & Co. Railroad Corridors and Colowyo Mine
Site, Moffat County, Colorado" by Joseph J. Lisch}:a:
The above report can be found in the Arc'-,aeolog_cal
Information Exhibit, Exhibit 5. The sites are also
located on the Historical and Archaeological Sites Map,
Map 16. Additional discussion was also provided in
Rule 2.04.4, Cultural and Historical Resource Information,
Pages 8 - 13.
The proposed warehouse/maintenance construction area
was also surveyed by Lischka. No sites were found in
this area.
The Historical and Archaeological Sites Map, b7ap 16,
has been revised to include site numbers, isolated finds,
the warehouse/maintenance area surv~_y, the Gossard
loadout area, a transportation corridor that covered
a portion of the present access road, and the 5/8 portion
• of Section 11 that was surveyed.
