-14-
• paint cans and a thin metal pot or fitting fragment. Nothing found
within this dump indicates that it is over fifty years old. It is
likely that this dump Sa related to the post 4lorld War II oil exploration
in the area. There is little possibility that subsurface deposits
are present in Locality 1 and it is not eligible for the NHRP.
Locality 2
Locality 2 consists of two fine-grained white quartzite intericr
flakes found ~uat to the vest of the western boundary of 5JA353.
No additional aboriginal cultural materials were found within the
vicinity. Site 5JA353 is located iamediately to the east of this
locality. It is unlikely that these flakes were collected by the
people who utilized this site, siace the flakes were not focad wit'?i:'!
• the site grope- and they were found somewhat scattered. Because
E
the flakes were found oa a floodplain, there is a possibility that
subsurface cultural deposits are present. The tv~ flakes were fou^_d
over 50 feet (15.2 m) from the existing road so it is unlikely that
this location will be affected by the construction of a coal haul
read, which centers on the existing road. The soil, which consists
of a tan silty sa^.d, is over 20 cm in depth, based on the depcn or
the arroyo [o the north and the road tracks to the soot`.. T!:e
vegetation at this locality consists of sage, bunch grasses ana
snakeveed. Although there is a slight possibility that subsurface
cultural _'eposits are present at this locality, it will not be
affected by the construction of a coal haul road with a sixty foot
• right-of-vay centered on the existing two-track road.
Locality 3
, -
Locality 3 is a recent dump which contained zinc mason jar lids,
