175
• site: 5MF326 (Figs 4, 45),
site Type: Open camp.
Location: SE';SW';, Sec. 13, Ton, R91w; UTM Zone 13, E482,300m., N4,465,200m,
Description: 5MF326 is an open camp located on a low bench at the end of an
east-trending ridge spur that terminates above a permanent beaver pond in
Badger Creek. The site elevation is 7320 ft. (2,231 m.). Vegetation around
the site area includes sagebrush and grasses, with dense stands of aspen, Gam-
ble's oak, and serviceberry to the west. There is a meadow below the site and
near the beaver pond which supports very dense and lush stands of grass and
marsh vegetation.
The major concentration of artifactual materials was located on the south-
facing side of the bench, covering an area 20 by 20 m., although a thin scatter
• of flakes was also found on the east and north sides of the bench as well. A
relatively new fenceline cuts through the southern end of the site. There is
a bulldozed strip along the fence which has exposed more flakes. A large quan-
tity of reddened sandstone was observed in an unpatterned distribution. None
of this appeared to be related to any visible features.
Diagnostic artifacts: Metates, Types IA, IB, IIB; manor, Type IIIA; projectile
points, Types IVA, IVB; perforator, Type Ii.
evaluation: 5MF326 has been too badly disturbed to have potential for yielding
information important to prehistory. However, if the site is directly endan-
gered by development of the tract, it should be afforded protection under other
antiquities legislation.
•
