It is a practical classification <br />• based on limitations of the soils, the rink of damage vhen they are used, and <br />the way Lhey respond to treatment. 'fie soils are classified according to <br />degree and kind of permanent limitation, but without consideration of ma,Jor <br />and generally ezpenslve lendforming that would change the slope, depth, or <br />other characteristics of the soils; and without consideration of possible but <br />unlikely maJor rer.lmm~tion protects. <br />Rosisn numerals are used to show tha 9 broad Capability Classes and letters <br />follow the class numeral to indicate the principal problem or hazard. Classes <br />and sub-classes used are ae follows: <br />Class I - Fev or no :Limitntlona that restrict choice of crops or require <br />conservation eeasures. <br />Class II - Some limitations that reduce the choice of crops or require <br />moderate coneervetlon measures. <br />Class III - Severe limitations that reduce choice of crops or require <br />special conservation practices or both. <br />Clans IY - Very severe 1'imitatlons that restrict the choice of crops, require <br />very careful management, or Doth. <br />Class V - Not suited for cultivation but has few or no hazards vhen used for <br />pasture, range, woodland or wildlife. <br />Class VI - Not suited for cultivation. Severe limitations. Suited for range, <br />pasture, voadland or wildlife with careful management and needed conservation <br />practices. <br />Clans VII - Not suited for cultivation. Very severe limitations. Suited for <br />range, woodland or wildlife uses if carefully managed. Usually cannot apply <br />physical practices such as pitting, furrowing, seeding, etc. <br />Class VIII - Not suited for eultlvation, range, posture or woodland. Suited <br />only for recreation, vildlite, vatar supply or esthetic purposes. <br />e - troslon by wind or voter is tha mayor problem. <br />v - Cccessive eater ouch as wetness, overflow, or high voter table. <br />s - MaJor problems is in the soil. It may be too shallow, Loo heavy, stony, <br />low in fertility, salty, alYaliae or have low sioieture capacity. <br />r - Climate is the mn,Jor hasard.
