. 2.05.6
•
U
TR-026
f~ P PRovE rj
9/~ y~os
Mountain Canal is 6.0 mg/I with values ranging from 2 to 26 mg/1. A 0.1 mg/I
increase in Chloride is not considered significant.
Based upon the above calculation, the clarified mine discharge into the Fire
Mountain Canal will not have a measurable impact on the quality of water in
the river.
Clarified mine water discharge into the Deer Trail Ditch is not considered
because there is no agricultural or domestic use of the Deer Trail Ditch water
downstream of the point where the mine water enters the Ditch.
The average TDS measurement at the upstream Fire Mountain Canal
monitoring station for the operation period (2002 AHR) is 84 mg/I. The Fire
Mountain Canal does not have low flow, it either flows at its 170 cfs +/-
capacity or it is empty. The following table presents the estimated affect the
mine discharge will have on the quality of water in the Fire Mountain Canal:
PHC Fire Mountain Canal
Flow m Flow cfs TDS
Canal 76,296 170 84
Mine Dischar a 175 0.39 1500
Combined Flow 76,471 170.39 87
Based upon the above calculation, the mine discharge into the Fire Mountain
Canal will not have a measurable impact on the quality of water in the river.
As stated in section 2.04.7, if continuous mine discharge occurs, the effluent
will be piped over or around the Deer Trail Ditch and the Fire Mountain Canal
to avoid any potential quality degradation. At a continuous mine discharge
rate of 175 gallons per minute, the Deer Trail Ditch would take on the
characteristics ofmine water. As demonstrated above the degradation to the
Fire Mountain Canal is not significant.
The sediment laden water conveyed by the Deer Trail Ditch and Fire
Mountain Canal tends to seal the bottom and banks of the ditch and canal
which minimizes seepage. Thus, seepage of mine water from the ditch or
canal into the ground water system is considered negligible.
2.05 - 73ii - 9/1s/o3
