ERO Resources
soil series descriptions in Illustration 8 are denoted by pit number in
• the descriptions.
e. TOPSOIL CFU)RACTERIZATION
Table I-1 lists each mapping unit with its topsoil suitability rating from
Class 1 to 4 and estimated average depth. Class 1 soils have the greatest
quantity of suitable topsoil while Class 4 lands have no suitable
material. The topsoil suitability class ifioation is described in the
ensuing discussion.
Seleoted charaoteristics affecting the suitability of the soils for
topsoil material are in Table I-2. These data provide a guide for
evaluating coils prior to and during mining. Thsss data have been
incorporated in the map unit dssoriptions to provide the basin information
necessary for stripping, etockpilirg and replacing suitable topsoil
materials.
• The depths listed in Tales I-I and I-3 for suitable topsoil materials are
averages for the soil series phase, soils series variant or soil series
complex. They were derived from field inspection and may not match
exactly the depths provided in the soil profile descriptions (illustration
B) or laboratory data (Illustration C) for the typifying pedon. The
computation of estimated average depth of topsoil is shown in Table i-3.
Illustrations A and B provide details of mapping units and series
descriptions.

II.I- 3
