Revised 11/85
• Barrier pillars are blocks of coal which are deliberately not extracted
during the mining process in order to provide protection or support to
the mine entries or reserves. Mine Plan includes several barrier pillar
types. They are as follows:
Main Entry Barrier Pillars. These main barrier pillars will be located
on each side of the main entries to provide the necessary support to
keep the main entries open for the life of the operation.
Fire Protection Pillars. Afire protection pillar will be left as shown
on the Mine Plan Map (Map 9), to provide support to recover the panel
pillars and to act as a partition in separating mine panels. This
partition will act to prevent containment of intake air and will also
serve as a firewall in case a panel were to catch fire.
The proposed drift portals of the Bear No. 3 Portals will be located at
the outcrop of the C Coal Seam. Each set of portals will have an
equipment roadway, an intake entry, a belt entry, and a return entry.
During the development stage of the operation, these return portal
entries will host an operating fan for mine ventilation.
Mining within the next 5 years calls for the extraction of reserves only
in the C Coal Seam. Future mining into the B Coal Seam, which is below
the C Coal Seam, will probably be accomplished by the use of a rock
slope driven from the C Coal Seam to the B Coal Seam to allow men,
materials, and coal to be transported underground with little or no
additional surface disturbance.
Mining Sequence Description. Actual mining and development work for the
Bear No. 3 will begin following approval by the Division and the OSM.
This work is scheduled for early 1982. One of the first jobs of the
Bear Coal Company will be to develop two additional entries parallel to
the existing three entries found in the old Edwards Mine. The two
entries will be on each side of the three entry system and will extend a
distance of about 2,000' in from the portals. The first east panel will
be developed off the entries and a small block of coal in this panel
-19-
