Therefore, most of the <br />groundwater emerges in canyon walls as seeps and springs. <br />Details of the groundwater regime of the area are set forth in the Bear <br />Coal Company Permit Application submitted to the Division on February <br />16, 1981, and also in the Mt. Gunnison Mine Permit Application submitted <br />by ARCO. This information has been previously reviewed by the Division <br />and OSM. Most water that is discharged as a result of seeps and springs <br />is lost on the canyon walls or dries up during the later summer months. <br />The dip of the permit area is to the north; therefore, any water that <br />might drain into the workings would, likewise, drain from the portal <br />area. No drainage of this type has occurred in either the old Edwards <br />Mine or the current Bear No. 3 Mine. <br />During drilling of exploration holes on the permit area, no water was <br />reported to be encountered. <br /> <br />Surface Water <br />The permit area is drained mainly by the North Fork of the Gunnison <br />River. This river has carved a major canyon in the area which, in part, <br />has exposed the coal seams that are being mined in this valley. <br />Information on the surface water hydrology is included as part of the <br />Mt. Gunnison Mine Permit Application submitted by ARCO. Surface water <br />quality and quantity measurements and estimates are found in the <br />aforementioned permit applications. This data has been reviewed and <br />evaluated by OSM and the Division in these previous permit applications. <br />The hydrological features of the permit area encompassed by this permit <br />revision are set forth on the Geology/Hydrology Map (Map 6).
