Joy
Rio Blanco County Surveyor
P.O. Box 1157
Meeker. CO S1G41
Dear Mr. Joy:
I appreciate your notification regarding the gravel pit nn East Douglas Creek drainage. [
vas able to visit the site on 4/6/98. While the Div iaion of Wildlife does not like to see any
loss of habitat, we do understand the need for road base and gravel.
TI[e location of the proposed p[t is in mule deer and elk winter range. Based upon the
tracks that I observed during my visit and peat personal observations, there ie a Cair amount of
mule deer movement across the area during the winter months. The area also showed evidence of
use by cottontail rabbits, coyotes, elk, a variety of small rodents, and several bird species.
[t is my understanding that all material (dirt and gravel) will be removed from the site
Yor road base stabilization. After removal, the aides will then be sloped and seeded. The
impacts to the wildlife include, but are not limited to, loss of forage, disruption of movement
patterns, forced migration out of the area due to a loss of nesting and burrowing sites, and
potential increased sediment into East Douglas Creek.
However, based upon the surrounding area antl small size of the pit, I do not feel that
these impacts will have a sign[( icant effect on the wildlife populations providing careful
revegetation and drainage control ie done. I would suggest that some browse species, possibly
salt bush or rinterfat, be added to tl[e seed mixture for the benefit of the deer herd.
Again, thank you for the notification. If I can be of any help. Please Ceel free to call.
') ~(
Sin erely., ~ ~ , /I
//~ ~ ~~ /
Nark W. Caddy
District Wildlife Manager
Rangely Distric[
P. O.
