This landslide was probably caused by the ex-
cavations during the construction of the sedimentation pond.
The slide requires early treatment and remedial measures be-
cause it may significantly decrease the storage capacity of
the pond.
We recommended surveying of one profile across the land-
slide area and surveying of the area of the landslide. Re-
medial measures to stabilize the landslide will be recommended
during Phase 2 of the proposed geotechnical and design study.
5.0 RECLAMATION
5.1 GENERAL
As discussed in previous sections, geotechnical problems
related to individual facilities, such as the rock and soil
cuts and fills, are very limited at the mine site. It is
evident, however, that the factors of safety of these facili-
ties are frequently very close to unity. The mine operator
carries the risk resulting from these low factors of safety,
and he has to be prepared to remedy any potential problems.
We feel that factors of safety of individual cuts or fills
will have to be increased during the future mine reclamation.
Long-term stability will have to be achieved as it would be
difficult, if.not impossible, to perform any remedial measure
after the cessation of the mining operation.
