P
Development Consultants, Inc.
MEMORANDUM
TO: George Robinson, Sun Coal Meadows No. 1 File
FROM: Randy Schroeder
DATE: November 4, 1985
SUBJECT: Vegetation Reconnaissance Field Report
On September 5, 1985, I conducted a reconnaissance of the revegetated areas
on Sun Coal's Meadows No. 1 Mine near Steamboat Springs, Colorado. During my
inspection, I made ocular estimates of the vegetative cover and the types of
species which made up that cover. I looked at six different areas within the
reclaimed pit area: 1) the previously reclaimed area (reclaimed 1981); 2) the east-
tacing slope on the west side of the backfilled area; 3) the west-facing slope; 4) the
bench area on the south side of the reclaimed area; 5) the steep slope on the
. southwest side o[ the bench; and 6) a repaired gully south o[ the old reclaimed
area. Approximate locations of these areas ere shown in pencil on the attached
map.
Previously Reclaimed Area
This area was seeded in 1981 and has been fenced. It was seeded with a mix
nearly Identical to that used on the other areas. Cover. is excellent with about
60 percent vegetative cover made up primarily of a variety o[ grasses including
wheatgrasses, junegrass, brome, and some timothy with vetch es the dominant forb.
Total ground cover (with litter) was nearly 90 percent.
East-Facing Slope
This, es well as the rest of the areas, were seeded in the fall of 1984 and
therefore had experienced only one growing season. The vegetative cover was
approximately 10 percent with the majority of that being clover. The predominant
grasses were brome Qnd wheatgrasses. Some bluegrasses and timothy were present
as well es vetch. Small amounts of weeds (thistle and Russian thistle) also
occurred. A grain cover crop was still standing and mulch was evident.
~•
- 351 - (Rev. 5/86)
7308 S. Alton Way • Suite K • Englewood, Colorado 60112
(3031 RSO-0930
