The phases in the interior of the pit progress form south to north as long narrow east west
directional strips. As Connell mines this area they will mine from west to east. This will allow
them to backfill areas on the west end of the property with on-site overburden and topsoil.
Mining in these phases will limit the amount of overburden and topsoil stockpiled.
Table D-1 outlines the maximum area of disturbance at any one time in the life of the mine.
Table D-I is based on disturbance in Phase 3. See Exhibit L for more detail.
Table D-1 MAXIMUM AREA OF DISTURBANCE
MAJOR DISTURBANCE: ACRES
Excavation 14
Stripped Prior to Mining 3
Topsoil/Overburden Stockpiles 1.5
MODERATE DISTURBANCE:
Access Roads 0.3
Processing Area 10
Backfilling of open cut 3
Topsoil distribution/grading 2.75
MINOR DISTURBANCE:
Reclaimed and Seeded Areas 2.75
TOTAL: 37.30
Connell will observe the minimum setbacks as required by Larimer County. These setbacks are
labeled on Exhibit C.
Methods of Mining
Connell will use the same mining techniques as they presently use at the Stute Pit. The operation
will be open pit dry mining.
Dozers, scrapers, haul trucks and/or rubber tired front end loaders will be used to first remove the
topsoil and overburden. They will strip enough land to keep ahead of the mining progress. The
topsoil and overburden will be stockpiled on the west side of the pit or used to backfill. The
same equipment will be used to mine the sand and gravel and transport it to the processing area.
Material for processing will be crushed, screened (sorted), and then conveyed to stockpiles. The
crushing and screening facilities are portable and will be moved with the mining progress. These
processing facilities will be placed in either the pit bottom or on higher ground, depending on
what is more functional at the time.
4
