~ECLnI~AT:G"d ?L:,,'d
it is not, blowing dust will become a severe problem and could obscure visibility
• on the Interstate resulting in possible hazards. This is not to mention the air
pollution caused by blowing dust on even moderately windy days.
Revegetation of this site will not be easy or quick. The site is dry, the
precipitation unreliable, and the soils ill suited for easy revegetation. The use
of fast growing and drought resistant species is essential to the control of wind
erosion, which is the greatest erosional hazard on this site.
Planting will only occur between late autumn and early spring. Any other
time is fraught with severe risk of failure, especially in the summer (between May
15 and November 15). Seeding will be done by drilling or broadcasting. If
drilled, a standard field drill or, if the surface is rather stony, a rangeland
drill will be used. However, the hairy seeds in the mixture will make it
difficult to drill effectively and uniformly due to clogging of the machinery. If
• the area to be seeded is less than 5 to 10 acres (expected to be the usual case),
then broadcasting would be a more effective means of seeding, although twice as
much seed is needed and the surface must be prepared somewhat differently.
One of the most effective methods of seeding used on mines in the Colorado
Springs area is to broadcast the seed within a few days after spreading the soil
and then drag the soil with a chain rake behind a lightweight vehicle. This can
be just as effective as drilling, far less costly, and produces a natural looking
vegetation rather early in the revegetation process. The disadvantage of the
method is that it requires careful timing in topsoil replacement, seed delivery,
and planting.
In all probability, a number of different methods will be used to plant those
areas where planting will be required. Each method is adaptable to the conditions
at hand. For example, in a dry year drill seeding may be used so as to achieve
• page 7 of 10 Exhibit E
