~_~,;~,art., ; _..,.
~';
was described in the mining plan. Here a description of the replacement of soil
• will be provided.
Replacement will occur in accordance with the recommendations iri the soil
information exhibit. Those recommendations essentially state that a minimum of 8"
of soil should be replaced, with a greater amount being placed where gravel or a
shale substrate remains, but not exceeding 18". This maximum value is important
in that a greater amount would be a waste of soil as well as being unnecessary for
the establishment of vegetation if the site is revegetated.
It should be pointed out that by soil is meant "topsoil" and does not include
overburden and subsoil materials that are to be stripped separate from the
topsoil. A total depth (overburden + subsoil + topsoil) of more than 2 or 3 feet
is pointless for the growth of primarily grasses.
Topsoil will be spread, whenever possible, just before seeding. This not
only eliminates an extra operation of discing, but also provides the opportunity
• for broadcast seeding which can be more economical than drilling and just as
successful provided the surface is rough and loose. Spreading topsoil will only
be done after the land has been thoroughly graded, overburden and subsoils, if
any, replaced, and the timing is such that planting can occur with the opportunity
for reasonable success.
The next section of this plan will include a description of the topsoil
stockpile stabilization using vegetation.
REVEGETATION: Whether revegetation will be applied to the entire site or only a
portion of it will depend totally upon whether the site will be reclaimed to a
development soon after completion of the mining. It is clear that with a mining
timetable of about 10 years, assuming the best market conditions and considerably
less reserve than is indicated, some of the land will need to be revegetated.
