MINING PLAN
Subsoil and overburden will be stripped and saved separate from the topsoil.
•
•
Mixing of these two materials would not be desirable and could cause a degradation
of the soil. Furthermore, replacement of subsoil and overburden will serve the
purpose of not only supplying a base for the topsoil and a crude form of
restructuring the original soil, but will also allow filling various small
irregularities in the final surface. As a result this material will largely be
used to create the final grade on the surface.
51bT~Ei ~ I~'ASL?RFS: ESctending from between the various gravel outcrops are
many valleys of various dimensions. In the smaller valleys on the north end of
the operation, erosional damages are highly localized and well controlled by the
presence of the Skunkbush Sumac. In the southern portions of the site and in some
of the easterly facing valleys, the erosional problems are considerably more
severe. As a rule the shrub cover is slight and the exposure of Pierre Shale
becomes far more of a problem than is the case in the northern portions of the .
site. This means that in all but a few of the water courses, the control of run-
off to limit erosion and sedimentation on adjacent lands will be required.
In some places, control measures are already in place in the form of
stockponds and small dams that periodically capture run-off. However, with a
gravel operation on the hills, the run-off problems could become considerably more
severe.
The first measure to be implemented, is to control as much run-off as
possible in the pit operations themselves. Operating west to east in most of the
phases will help to establish and maintain a barrier on the "downhill" side of the
operation. This will capture at least some of the run-off from the operation
before it leaves the pit area. In some instances, control from within the pit is
• page 6 of 10 Exhibit D
