• The following is a summary of the water use at the Keenesburg Mine. Water use has been limited
to these three activities:
- Evaporation
- Office, Shop, and Other Misc. Needs
- Dust Suppression
A. Evaporation
Because of the planned reclamation of B-pit to above water table level for preparation of ash
disposal, water surface areas are greatly reduced at the Mine site. The water surface area in
B-pit has been eliminated; therefore, the need for the evaporation pond has also been
eliminated. These two areas were the main source of evaporation at the Mine. The only
water surface area remaining at the Mine is the dugout. It is currently filled with cattails to
the extent that no water surface area is exposed. It is Coors' belief that evaporation from any
water surface area at the Keenesburg Mine site is in a small enough amount that any estimate
of evaporation would be immaterial.
B. Office, Shop, and Other Misc. Needs
Potable and wash water is supplied from deep well #24650-F (LFH # 1). Approximately 0.50
acre foot of water is used yearly to supply the shower and sanitary needs of the mine.
• Approximately 1.00 acre foot of water is used in the shop area for equipment wash down and
maintenance.
C. Dust Suppression
The need for dust suppression is limited to the ash dump area and the access road to the
dump area. Approximately 0.50 acre foot of water is currently being used for dust
suppression. The need for dust suppression at the ash dump is limited because the dump is
being covered with overburden as it is filled.
In conclusion, the sole use of water at the Keenesburg Mine is from anon-tributary water source.
The current uses listed above are the only foreseen used: however, if other uses become evident,
Coors will supply the Division with the needed revision.
•
58
