JAMES IF. MINER. President
HELEN P. MINER. Viceā¢President

BUILDERS AGGREGATE CO.
-..~; -~
FORT MORGAN, COLORADO 80701
Page 3
the earthen ~ike and allowing Great Western's holding ponds
to fail and alloy the materials stored to enter the river
xay,
Our method of putting the overburden dirt against
an already earthen dike, strengthens G.W.'s dikes and
may be used as a roadway, stockpile area and may also
be a source of earthen material to put over the sand
(Spoils) xhen it fi].la in the previous mined area, This
method best allows reinforcement of Great Western's dikes
and a sound xay of economically handling the huge amounts
of sand, using that Band to fill the mined area and allowing
reclamation to continue.
5. Reseeding ie unnecessary as well as wasteful. The South
Platte flood plane area is a highly self regenerating
area xhen it comes to vegetation. The area is full of
cottonxood trees and vegetation common to this area.
The Great Western holding ponds and surrounding area
has a layer of lime dust that is mixed in the soil and
acts as natural fertilizer. The growth rate ie aided by
the abandant xater table of the South Platte itself.
We have pictures of previous areas mined by Builders
aggregate Co., which have been filled xith our sand (spoils)
and recovered xith stockpiled dirt that has reverted to
its' natural atate.xithin one or txo years. Also because
of the frequency of floods, any area reaeededwould eventual-
ly be covered by flood xaters, silt and sand, and the
natural vegetation of the area would take over. Such high
waters have been knoxn to last a month or more.
For these reasons, reseeding ie impractical. (See
the Soil and Water Resources recomendation by Vernon Hasa,
DC, SCS, USDA1, in Builders Aggregates permit application.)
6, The sand ("spoils") ie usually left to accumulate to a
height of ten feet above the river bottom. After leveling
off of this sand by bulldozer, a layer of stockpiled over-
burden (dirt and Clay), x111 be spread about txo feet in
depth over the sand.
PHONE: 86]-6334
7. Sending thn lake banks has not been done as natural vegetation
takes over quick],y and also the lake is being refilled Dy
sand from our ongoing operations so the lake bank is alxays
in flux.
