METHODS
• Systematic aerial surveys were conducted at regular intervals during
the winters of 1978-79 and 1979-80 along major rivers, around reser-
voirs, and through upland areas with concentrated public (BLM) lands.
These surveys provided data on population parameters such as numbers,
age structure and distribution of wintering bald eagles. All areas
were subsequently surveyed on the ground to record specific habitat
characteristics, disturbance factors, prey availability and food habits.
Seven major flight routes were flown according to the following sched-
ules:
1. San Miguel River Helicopter (B-1) once/month
(USGS County Series Maps: San Miguel (sheets 2,3); Montrose
(3,4); Mesa (5))
2.
