7.0 SUh1MARY
• Consolidation Coal Company proposes to mine coal in the Danforth
Hills north of Meeker, Colorado. Potentially affected areas include the
coal mine area and a rail spur linking the mine to existing rail facil-
ities; of the latter, two alternatives are proposed. Cultural resources
investigations in these three areas resulted in the discovery of 49
cultural resources: 25 sites and 24 isolated finds.
In the proposed coal mine area, eight sites and 16 IFs have been
recorded. Two sites, the Uehlein and James Homesteads, are considered
to be significant and eligible for nomination to the NRHP. Avoidance is
the preferred treatment for these two sites. If avoidance is impossible,
a mitigation plan involving extensive photodocumentation, archival
research, informant interviews, and archaeological testing is recorrmen-
ded.
Along the proposed Rail Spur #1, eight sites and three IFs 4rere
recorded by this and previous surveys. four of these sites are
considered to be significant and potentially eligible for nomination to
the NRHP. Avoidance is the preferred treatment for these significant
sites. However, if avoidance is unfeasible, a mitigation plan involving
limited test excavations and, if warranted by testing results, extensive
excavations to gather chronometric and subsistence data, are recorr.2nded.
Proposed Rail Spur #2 was not surveyed intensively. However, a
• literature and file search of the corridor determined that at least 14
previously recorded sites are kno~vn to be located within a one-mile wide
corridor, centered on the proposed right-of-way. Three of the sites
have been judged by the original recorders to be significant and pet2n-
tially eligible for nomination to the NRHP. These results suggest that
the density of cultural resources in this area is high. If this corri-
dor is selected, intensive cultural resources investigations will be
required.

38
