of lithic materials, including diagnostic artifacts (projectile points)
and a variety of tools, as well as two possible hearths. The site was
recommended for nomination, to the NRHP by the original recorder due to
its potential for contributing information important to the region's
prehistory (criterion d, 36 CFR 60.4). The projectile points indicate an
age of ca. 500 BC-AD 900 and the variety of artifacts point to a campsite
function for the site with considerable tool manufacture and repair. The
hearths may contain suitable materials to yield chronometric dates for
the site.
5MF746 - This site, recorded and evaluated in 1978, was
believed by the recorder to be insignificant and not eligible for the
NRHP. It was located in a wheat field and, consequently, had lost much
of its contextual integrity. No features were apparent nor were ahy
diagnostic artifacts located. Art attempt was made by the present project
to relocate this site, but it apparently was destroyed by construction of
the Colowyo rail spur.
51TF1652 = This site was recorded in 1983 and recommended by
the original recorders as requiring additional data before NRHP eligi-
bility evaluations could be made. The site consists of numerous arti-
facts, although no diagnostic specir,,ens were noted, and two hearths,
defined by heat-altered stones and dark stains in the soil. Since the
site may offer a possibility for radiocarbon dates, flotation analysis,
and a potential for other subsurface cultural data, we believe this site
should be regarded as potentially eligible for the fJRHP under criterion d
• (36 CFR 60.4).
5.3.2 Sites Recorded by the Consolidation Coal Inventory
5hIF1933 - This site consists of a scatter of historic arti-
facts, a1T fragmentary, which date to at Toast 1417. ~ No historic fea-
tures are present and the site may represent a small dump. Although the
materials meet the age requirements for NRHP eligibility, the remains do
not possess significant characteristics for nomination. The research
potential is limited and its integrity has been altered by the erosive
effects of Wilson Creek. It has no known association with other signif-
icant historical sites or events in the area.
5t4F1934 - This historic site consists of the remains of a
homestead ca. 1909) and presently includes a collapsed dugout which,
local informants say was used for storage, and remnants of a bridge
across Wilson Creek. At one time, a clapboard house was present, but it
was moved about 30 years ago. This site has lost much of its integrity
due to removal of the primary building and deterioration and possesses
little in the way of research or architectural potential. The possibil-
ities for historical archaeological deposits are unknown; however, no
indications of subsurface features or materials were noted during the
survey. Artifacts are scant across the site. For these reasons, the
site is considered not significant and not eligible for nomination to
. the NRHP.
5h1F1935; 1936; 1937 - The significance evaluations of these
three prehistoric sites can be combined due to overall similarity of
35
