cu. ft. or 134,640 gallons of water. The overall retention time is
calculated to be 3.6 hours per pond. Assuming lime and ferric sul-
fate are added to the circuit, sludge builds up at the rate of 0.205
tons per day (TPD) and is removed and shipped to Cotter's Mill at Canon
City about once every six months. However, this period of time has
been extended significantly due to the elimination of lime and ferric
sulfate additions to the circuit since October, 1976.
*Earthen Pond No. 1
This pond is constructed of clay and crushed rock, and measures
125 ft. long x 50 ft. wide x 4 ft. deep for a volume of 25,000 cu. ft.
or 187,000 gallons. The overflow of 620 gpm from Pond 1 or ?empties
into this unit which provides a retention time of five hours. The pond
berms are approximately 4 ft. at the top. Solids buildup is at the rate
of 0.151 TPD.
*Underground Pond Storage
If the overflow from Earthen Pond No. 1 climbs in ppm solids,
this stream is diverted to two underground storage areas. Tlie total
volume of these areas is approximately 8300 cu. ft. or 62,000 gallons.
This provides an extra retention time of 1.7 hours which is <.;ufficient
to lower the solids content by 30Y. The ponds are old mine workings
or stopes enclosed on four sides by solid Precambrian rock. When
one area becomes inactive, another one can be employed. The~;e so-
called ponds are only used periodically and when in use pump; are
employed to transfer solutions.
*Earthen Pond tJo. 2
The overflow from Earthen Pond i•io. 1 or the underground ponds,
• as the case may be, is directed into Earthen Pond No. 2. Th~s pond
is 100 ft. long x 60 ft. wide x 4 ft. deep and will hold 24,000 cu. ft. or
D-13
