*Barium Chloride Mixing Tank
• This is a 6 ft. diam x 4 ft. high, 840-gallon, FRP tank with an
agitator for mixing barium chloride and water to yield a 10% BaCI~ solu-
tion. The solution is added continuously to the reaction ve~~sel and its
addition causes the radium to pr2cipitate as radium-barium sulfate.
*Lime Mixing Tank
This is an 8 ft. diam x 4 ft. high, 1500-gallon, FRP t~~nk with an
agitator for mixing calcium oxide and water to yield slaked "ime.
This slurry is added on an as required basis so that the pH of the'
outflow from Earthen Pond No. 3 is between 7.0 and 9.0.
*Chlorine
A cylinder of sodium hypochlorite weak solution is located near
the reaction vessel and its addition is on an as required ba<_•is to
control algae buildup.
• Since October, 1976, the precipitation of Ra226, suspended solids,
and pH were well controlled with only barium chloride and Separan IJP-30.
Ferric sulfate and lime have been kept in a "standby" condition since then.
To date the water treatment plant has provided all that is required
to ensure that the outflow from Earthen Pond No. 3 meets all the control
specifications for effluents as established by the Colorado Ciepartment of
Health and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (see Exhibit G, Water
Information). Any unplanned spills will require diversion back to the
ponds or to the water treatment plant.
D-10
