The roaiowang anrormation pertaining to wildlife <br />use ay the Mineo Cana Recla,oation Boars in their <br />of a mining permit for Somerset Mining Company. <br />CJ <br />SOMEr~5cT COAL MINE <br />as provides for <br />consiaeraciun <br />The Coloraao Division or Wildlife does hereby find, to the best <br />or our knowledge, that the impacs of the proposed mining <br />operation on wildlife will be minor. <br />MINE LOCATION: T. 13 S. , R. 90 W. , Sect ion 9. <br />WILDLIFc SPECIES LIST: Deer, elk, bear, blue grouse, coyote, <br />boocat, raptors iinciuaing goiaen and baia eagiesr, smaai <br />mammals ana non-game birds. <br />ENDANGE:~ED SPECIES IMPACTED: Northern Bala Eagle (wintery <br />ASSESSP'IErVT OF IMPACT ON WILOLIFc: TI-re majority or impacts nave <br />occurred during past developement of this mine. The new portal <br />location is adjacent to severe winter ranges for deer ana elk. <br />The planned conveyor belt from the new portal to the loan out <br />will not be high enough above the ground (app. 4') to allow <br />normal movements of these species, particularly deer. Although <br />no liquio discharges are anticipated by the company, if there is <br />any discharge from the proposes mine, aquatic species which are <br />sensitive to water quality will be negatively impacted. <br />RECOMME,DATION FOR WILDLIFE ENHANCEMENT: Our division <br />recommends that Somerset Mine be required to incorporate a <br />design into the new conveyor belt system which will provide <br />underpasses to allow unimpeded deer movements through the area. <br />MINE RECLAMATION RECOMMENDATION: Water quality is a very <br />important problem in the North Fork valley. It is imperative <br />that any mine acid drainage from Somerset Mine be closely <br />monitored and controlled.
